Just got a sweet Nikon D5000 camera for myself today. I have really wanted a nice camera for some time now and i got a nice bonus at work so i decided now was the time :)

Anyone familiar with this camera or have any tips to offer my way? I am a total newbie... other than dinky digital cameras.... this is my first!

I am super excited to learn to use it though!! :)

shoot in auto and just change white balance till you get the hang of it a little!

then move to a P (program auto) and experiment....cant mess up a shot too bad in there plus youll learn what does what. use the preset modes for what they are there for...youd be suprised how good of pics you can pull out of those. no need to shoot full manual at all.

What he said... Use the programs and learn what everything does first. I have a D70 and it was a great camera to relearn the basics. I have a D300 now and love it but there is a bit more involved with it since there are no program modes.

Get the best glass you can afford- it does make a difference. There are some really good forums out there on photography that can help you out too.
What lenses did it come with?

18-55mm VR ( i read that off the lens itself .... i think thats right.)

I too have a D70, and I envy your purchase! Enjoy it!

As for advice... what they said.

Shot a-lot and I mean alot. The more the subject can move, the more shots you need to take.

Yesterday I shot the dog playing with the hose, in 15 minutes I shot 650 pictures. For Blown Euros, I shot 1100 pictures.

To much is never enough.

Im having a blast with it! I have a friend who has a D40 i believe, but he has some super cool lenses... so i have been also playing around with a 55-200VR telephoto and a 35mm low light lens...

holy cow... the 35mm is incredible for pictures of people.....

obviously a learning process... i can see how this could get expensive.... i already think i need all these fancy pants lenses... and those arent even super expensive ones im playing around with

Im shooting with a nikon d40, and love it! I usually shoot with the same lens (18-55mm VR) but also have a (55-200mm VR) that I use occasionally.

for advice.. like everyone else said, keep it auto and slowly move and adjust a few things as you go and you'll learn what makes the picture better and what makes it worse if you make little adjustments at a time

good purchase!

all 3 pics look good. dslr cameras are awesome. the white balance looks a little off in the first pic. maybe its just the amount of blue in the shot but something doesn't look right. i take a ton of pics of my kids. its a blast.

should have bought a canon

Man, everyone's getting a D. My girlfriend has one. But my friend has a Canon Rebel uh T2i I think, and its like 30 times better. But yeah, all of the preset shooting modes on the D5000 are pretty great for beginners. Also, if you plan on doing some serious shooting, the cheapest and best investment would be a tripod, if you don't already have one. And also, for far shots, a long angle lens.

I have a Canon XTi and I love it over a buddies Nikon.

It looks like you're already on your way to shooting some decent pics.. some more time you'll be good to go.
